The Orchid Show: On Broadway, Part Deux!

Pedestrian Entrance to NYBG

My parents were in town from St. Louis this past weekend and early this week. My mom is a fan of orchids, so I thought it would be a fun activity for us to go to the Orchid Show at NYBG. So on Tuesday morning we met at my parents’ hotel in Brooklyn Heights and my mom and I subwayed it to Grand Central, then took the Metro North train up to the Botanical Garden. It was only a 20 minute ride from Grand Central—and so much cheaper than renting a Zipcar and faster than taking the subway the whole way!

Most of the flowers on display were the same as my first time around, but there were a few new ones here and there. This show just never gets old!

So, here they are: my favorite photos from my second visit to The Orchid Show….

My Visit to The Orchid Show: On Broadway

Entrance Display

Yesterday morning, my boyfriend and I rented a Zipcar (to avoid sitting on the subway for 3+ hours to and from the Bronx) and drove up to the New York Botanical Garden for the annual Orchid Show! I’ve been talking about going to this show for awhile and was so, so excited to go! My visit to the NYBG’s Orchid Show in 2009 was what initially sparked my interest in these amazing plants, so this show holds a special place in my memories.

As you may know, this year’s theme is “On Broadway.” The display in the entrance to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is seen in the photo above, with orchids creating a proscenium arch and stage in the middle of the large reflecting pool. This display is comprised mostly of Cymbidiums and Epidendrums in yellows, oranges, and reds…and it’s quite a show-stopper (heehee).

Quick warning: LOTS of photos are ahead!  🙂

Orchid Show: Missouri Botanical Garden

One thing I loved about growing up in St. Louis (born & raised!) was the Missouri Botanical Garden, or “Mobot” as it’s known to locals. I have great memories of wandering the garden and collecting Osage Oranges, checking out the Climatron, visiting the amazing Japanese garden, and feeding the HUGE koi. What I don’t remember about Mobot is that they throw an annual Orchid Show—I’m not actually sure when they started doing it. This year’s Mayan-themed show began on January 29 and runs through March 27.

I wish I was in St. Louis right now so that I could go to this show! Fortunately, my mom (also an orchid lover/owner) is going to attend soon, so I’m sure I’ll get the full scoop, with photos, from her. Any readers out there in the St. Louis area—this is definitely something to check out!

To whet your appetite, Mobot has posted a video of last year’s Paris-themed Orchid Show:

Gorgeous!

It’s a new year, and I’m already thinking about the New York Botanical Garden‘s Orchid Show! I just looked at their website and found out that this year’s show runs from March 5 through April 25, and the theme is “On Broadway.”According to the site, “The lure and lore of orchids and the theater are melded by Tony award-winning set designer Scott Pask and image maker Drew Hodges to evoke the flair and excitement of Broadway.”

Sounds pretty different from the themes of the past two years, which were “Cuba in Flower” and “Brazilian Modern.” To be honest, I don’t really care what the theme is; I just want to go see thousands and thousands of amazing orchids!!

NYBG Orchid Show Ends This Sunday

Epidendrum Orchid

If you haven’t yet made a trip to the New York Botanical Garden for this year’s Orchid Show, there are only 3 days left (including today)! The final day for Limp phal leaf is this Sunday, April 11.

The show was so breathtaking that I went not once, but twice. There are more than 5,000 orchids to see — an amazing array of color and variety! The $20 admission fee is well worth it; I highly recommend that you check out the show before it’s too late.

Also, the show curators change out some of the orchids every couple of weeks, so even if you went to the show early on you may still see a whole bunch of different orchids if you return this weekend.

Get your tickets now! I command you. 🙂

Orchid Show, Part Deux

[BE FOREWARNED: Giant Photo Dump Ahead!]Phalaenopsis in bloom

After my first Orchid Show visit at the New York Botanical Garden this year, I vowed to return on a weekday and take my time exploring. Today, I did just that – and it was 100% worth paying another $20 for a ticket.

The NYBG switches out some of the orchids on display throughout the duration of the show, so I got to see some different orchids this time around. They had removed the Zygopetalums, which disappointed me a bit because I wanted to get more photos of those (they’re one of my faves!). Regardless, it was nice to see new blooms rather than the exact same display.

I did a slightly better job of taking photos of the I.D. signs during my second visit so that I could label my pictures properly.  It can be hard to tell which sign relates to which plant, so I labeled the photos as best I could. Hopefully I haven’t made any labeling mistakes, but if I have please feel free to correct me. If I don’t list the name of the orchid in the photo caption, it’s because I couldn’t find it. Again, if you know the name, leave a comment…enlighten me!
