Well, here we are. It’s a weird time globally, with the COVID-19 pandemic having taken over our usual routines. I hope you’re staying home, washing your hands a lot, and following whatever guidelines your city, state, or country have set in place. If you’re in the US and aren’t sure where to find reliable information about the virus, please visit CDC.gov.
During a panic grocery shopping trip, my husband found a gorgeous Zygopetalum hybrid that needed a good home. So it’s ours now, and I absolutely love it! The blooms are stunning, and they smell incredible.
Happy 2018, everybody! Now that we’ve put the dumpster fire called 2017 behind us, my wish is that 2018 is filled with less stress, outrage, and drama…globally.
Although I no longer live in New York City I wanted to post about this year’s New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show dates. The first time I attended the Orchid Show was the day my obsession with these plants began, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Sadly, I didn’t even get to go to the show last year because we moved to DC at the end of February and I was too busy packing up our apartment to visit the show before our move. Maybe I’ll have a chance to go to NYC and see the show this year!
My husband and I didn’t have any plans for the weekend, but he had his company car so we had more freedom to get around the city. On Saturday morning it dawned on me that having the car gave us the perfect opportunity to drive up to the NYBG for Orchid Evenings, so we bought our tickets online for the 7pm entry. Regular tickets are $35 apiece and include one signature cocktail; if you’re between the ages of 21 and 40 and you want to spend $100 per person you can upgrade to the Young Garden Circle Lounge for a private entrance, open bar, light bites, vodka taste testing, and more access inside the Conservatory.
The New York Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show officially kicks off this Saturday, February 27th and I’m sad to say I won’t be able to go immediately because I’ll be on vacation (though…I’m really not sorry to be going on vacation).
The Orchid Show is what initially started my obsession with these plants, and I’ve made it a point to attend at least once every year since I first went in 2009. Last year I even had the opportunity to attend on member preview day before the show opened to the public!
When is the 2016 Orchid Show? This year it will run from February 27 through April 17. Tickets are not available yet, but you can sign up to receive ticket alerts when they do go on sale.
After having attended the show for the past few years, I have some planning tips:
Happy Orchid Show Opening Day, everyone! I had the good fortune to be able to attend the NYBG‘s annual show yesterday on their member preview day. My friend is a member and was allowed to bring guests, so being the resident orchid nerd of our group of friends I was a shoo-in, along with another friend who happened to be free on a Friday. 🙂 Yesterday marked my seventh annual visit to this Orchid Show! I can’t believe it’s been that long since I first attended and fell head over heels in love with these plants.
I’ve already posted some photos from my visit on The Social Medias, so if you aren’t already following @brooklynorchids on Facebook and Instagram, please do so!
