Happy 2015! Phal Spikes + NYBG Orchid Show Dates Released

Happy New Year, everyone! I have to say, I am so glad to see 2014 go. The second half of the year was not the best. Despite some really fun stuff (Comic-Con, our honeymoon), July through the end of the year also involved an inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis for me (fun times…but it’s ok—I’m actually doing well right now), family drama, and plenty of stress to go along with it. All of which also left me less than motivated to blog, so that’s partly why you’ve seen fewer posts from me. Needless to say, I was thrilled when the clock struck midnight on Wednesday because it signaled a fresh start.

On a lighter note, though there’s not a whole lot going on with my orchids at the moment, I do have one Phal that’s about to bloom (YAY!) and a second one whose spike is coming along nicely:

Orchid Show 2014 Visit: Year Six

Wow…I’ve really been failing as a blogger lately. There’s been too much going on to keep up with regular posts here! The good news is that I currently have five Phals in bloom, three of which can be seen in this photo:

The Orchid Show 2013: Dates Announced!

Hanging out with Dendrobiums at the Orchid Show 2012
Hanging out with a Dendrobium display at the Orchid Show 2012

Good news, orchid lovers—the New York Botanical Garden‘s 11th annual Orchid Show dates have been released! The show will take place from March 2 to April 22, 2013. Tickets, as usual, are $20 per person…totally worth it for the orchid extravaganza that lies in wait!

The show is typically themed (last year was vertical gardens, 2011 was “On Broadway“), but this year it doesn’t sound like there is a specific theme. Here’s what the NYBG’s website says about The Orchid Show 2013:

Elaborate and kaleidoscopic displays throughout the galleries of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory explode with orchids in an amazing array of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. Tens of thousands of blooms–blue and purple vandas, green and yellow cymbidiums, delicate pink and white moth orchids, and more–stand out amid stately palms and exotic tropical leaves.

This year The Orchid Show is designed by Francisca P. Coelho, Vivian and Edward Merrin Vice President for Glasshouses and Exhibitions at the Garden. Coehlho is best known for her plantsmanship and key role in the design and development of high profile shows in the Conservatory.

Regardless of the theme (or lack thereof), you bet your ass I’ll make at least one visit to this year’s Orchid Show! Will you be attending?

Vote #24 for Orchid Board 2012 Calendar

Vote for #24!

I’ve been terrible with blogging…again. Sorry guys! I visited an orchid farm out in San Diego and I still need to sit down and write a post about it, which I WILL DO this week. But for now, I’m going to do a totally shameless plug. For those of you who are OrchidBoard.com members, voting is up for the 2012 calendar, and the photo that I submitted is in the running!

My photo (seen here) is #24 and I’m very proud of it, so PLEASE VOTE for it! We can each vote for 13 of the 43 entries, and there are plenty of great ones. But let’s be honest, I like mine the best. 🙂

I took the photo at this year’s Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden. It’s an xOdontocidium Sunlight ‘Pacific Punch’ and I absolutely love the burgundy-fading-into-peach coloring on the petals.

I’ve cast my votes. Voting ends in seven days, so be sure to make your choices ASAP. Thanks in advance for your support!

The Orchid Show: On Broadway, Part Deux!

Pedestrian Entrance to NYBG

My parents were in town from St. Louis this past weekend and early this week. My mom is a fan of orchids, so I thought it would be a fun activity for us to go to the Orchid Show at NYBG. So on Tuesday morning we met at my parents’ hotel in Brooklyn Heights and my mom and I subwayed it to Grand Central, then took the Metro North train up to the Botanical Garden. It was only a 20 minute ride from Grand Central—and so much cheaper than renting a Zipcar and faster than taking the subway the whole way!

Most of the flowers on display were the same as my first time around, but there were a few new ones here and there. This show just never gets old!

So, here they are: my favorite photos from my second visit to The Orchid Show…. Read more
