It’s been a long time since I wrote a post here. To be honest, I’ve been focusing more on my personal blog and my Instagram accounts. But I wanted to write a little update on a couple of my orchids and give a general update on my life.
First of all, I have one orchid in spike! Just one probably doesn’t sound that exciting, but most of my orchids haven’t bloomed in years. So I am psyched!
This past weekend my husband and I traveled to Northampton, Massachusetts for a wedding. The town happens to be home to Smith College, and we discovered after arriving that the school has a botanic garden right on campus. So the day after the wedding we headed over to check out the Lyman Conservatory on the picturesque property.
I recently updated my post on how to water orchids, and because fertilizing orchids goes hand in hand with watering, I thought it would be a good time to revisit this topic as well.
Like all living things, orchids need nutrition in order to thrive. Feeding orchids is an important part of caring for them and eventually getting them to rebloom. This post will focus specifically on fertilizing Phalaenopsis (moth) orchids because Phals are the most common orchids for beginners, available everywhere from your local florist to Ikea and Trader Joe’s.
It’s been a long time since I blogged about basic orchid care! Because I often get questions regarding how to water orchids, I thought it was high time I revisited my original post on watering these beautiful but sometimes challenging houseplants.
I mentioned awhile back that I wanted to keep an eye out for the Smithsonian Gardens’ annual orchid exhibit. Well, just last week I discovered that the exhibit, called Orchid Spectrum, is running from February 23 to April 8 at the United States Botanic Garden. So on Monday I took a chilly walk on over to check the exhibit out!
I’m back from a weeklong vacation in Grand Cayman (and I miss it already)! When my husband and I travel, we always like to see if there’s anything orchid-related that we can visit. In my research on things to do in Grand Cayman, I came across a couple of good candidates so we made it a point to visit both. But before I dive in to our adventures with orchids, I simply must share a photo of the stunning view from the beach at our Airbnb condo:
