10 Years of Brooklyn Orchids

Happy 10th Anniversary to Me

I recently realized that my blog’s TENTH anniversary had passed! I wrote my first post on February 13, 2010. It’s still hard to believe I’ve kept this blog going for that long! Obviously I don’t write here nearly as much as I did in the beginning, but I appreciate each and every one of you who has supported me along the way.

I’ve come a long way from growing a few orchids in my Brooklyn apartment to tending to around 30 of them (+ some African violets) in my very own urban backyard greenhouse in Washington DC. I truly still don’t consider myself an orchid expert; there’s so much I still don’t know. And I’ve lost MANY an orchid along the way (sorry, plant babies!).

This morning I picked up a pretty Phal at Trader Joe’s to celebrate my 10th blogaversary:

Trader Joe's Phal

Honestly, this orchid is not in the best shape and I would typically choose one that looks healthier and is in an earlier phase of its blooming cycle (see my guide to buying orchids). This one had a bunch of blasted buds, and many of its open buds are already fading. But I couldn’t resist these unique blooms:

The blooms are unlike any other Phals in my collection!

The roots aren’t in great shape so I’ll repot the plant soon and hope for the best.

The Smithsonian’s Orchid Exhibit starts today at the US Botanic Garden, and I hope to go see it in the next couple of weeks. So expect to see a post recapping my visit in the future!

I would be remiss if I didn’t say something about hitting such a milestone for this blog. Thank you again for reading, and here’s to many more years of blogging!
