A few days ago my husband and I returned from an eight-day trip to southern Florida, and it was a much-needed escape from the Brooklyn winter. We flew into Fort Lauderdale and drove to Miami to stay in South Beach for a night; then we drove down to the Keys, with a 3 night stay in Islamorada and a 4 night stay in Key West. Of course I knew I had to look out for orchids in this tropical climate, and I was not disappointed! Needless to say, I pretty much photographed every orchid that I saw, so I’ll be splitting this vacation up into two posts: the first will be photos of our visit to R.F. Orchids, a nursery and showroom in Homestead, and the second will be photos of orchids that we saw throughout our trip.
Let’s get started with R.F. Orchids! I actually hadn’t thought about looking for any orchid nurseries before we got to Florida (WHO AM I?!), and then once we arrived, we realized that our destination was the perfect place to check out a nursery. In Miami I did some Googling and came up with R.F. Orchids, located in Homestead, which is just slightly out of the way en route to the Keys. So we decided to take the minor detour, and it was well worth it! I confess that did a terrible job of noting orchids’ names because I was super overwhelmed (in a good way!). Here we go: TONS of orchid porn straight ahead…click on the images to view larger versions.
There you have it! These were just some of my photos from the visit. You can see the full photo album on Flickr. I didn’t end up buying anything because we were at the beginning of our trip and I didn’t want to put any orchids through the stress of traveling…and let’s be honest—I need zero new orchids to care for at the moment. 🙂
Thanks to R.F. Orchids for providing a beautiful experience! I definitely recommend visiting them if you happen to be in the area.
Next up: orchids around Miami and the Keys!
