Greenhouse Construction is Complete! Plus Phal Spikes

My Urban Backyard Greenhouse

I posted about the completion of my greenhouse on Instagram, but I somehow completely forgot to write about it here! What kind of blogger am I?! Actually, I haven’t blogged about it yet because we didn’t really get the greenhouse set up properly until this weekend.

Here’s the greenhouse in all its fully constructed glory:

Our Greenhouse Kit Has Arrived!

Greenhouse Construction Progress

I’ve been sharing some photos of this on my Instagram, but our greenhouse kit arrived last month! As you can imagine, I’m very excited!

I wanted to share our progress on the construction here, and of course I’ll blog about the greenhouse again once it’s fully finished. It’s taking time to complete the project because of our travels and my husband’s work schedule. As with growing orchids, patience is essential.  😛

We ordered a 6×10 lean-to kit from Cedar-Built in Canada awhile back, and it delivered in late June. My husband gets 100% of the credit for researching and selecting a kit (he is the best!).

Here’s what the kit looked like when it arrived:

Smithsonian Orchid Exhibit 2019

Orchids: Amazing Adaptations

I finally made it to this year’s Smithsonian Orchid Exhibit! I kept putting it off for kind of a dumb reason: the exhibit is located in the beautiful Kogod Courtyard inside the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which doesn’t open until 11:30am. And I prefer to get up and do activities first thing in the morning. But I finally made my way there yesterday just after opening and it was well worth the visit!

Orchid Tourism in Florida and Georgia

Playing Orchid Tourist

Last week, my husband and I took a six-day vacation to Orlando, Savannah, and Charleston. When I travel I always like to find out if there are orchids I can see along the way. John did a little research and found an orchid nursery called EFG Orchids in DeLand, Florida that was only a bit out of our way on the drive from Orlando to Savannah. So we took a tiny detour from our road trip to see some orchids!

EFG Orchids

EFG is fairly small compared to some other orchid nurseries we’ve visited, but they have a nice variety. I of course took lots of photos and wanted to share them here. I didn’t catch the names of all of these, so if you can ID any of them, please let me know in the comments. First up, I particularly loved this Phaleanopsis schilleriana:

New Home + Orchid Update

New Home, Who Dis?

Yeah, I basically just post here a few times a year now. Eventually I’d like to get back to posting more regularly, but I’ve been much more focused on my Adventures of Herman blog and Instagram. And over the past few months we were busy with getting our new home move-in ready. We moved in at the end of January (hooray!!) and are still getting settled in.

We will be building a greenhouse in our back yard, like I mentioned, but that isn’t going to happen until June. So I needed a temporary indoor setup for my orchids once we moved. First I put them in my office, on shelves by the eastern-facing windows:

Brooklyn Orchids 2019 Calendar is Now Available

12 Months’ Worth of Orchid Photography by Yours Truly

I have a confession: I meant to announce my 2019 calendar before Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but I completely forgot. Marketing fail! In my defense, my mind has been occupied with new house stuff, and we were traveling over Thanksgiving.

Anyway…the 2019 Brooklyn Orchids Calendar is now in my Zazzle store! Ta-da!Brooklyn Orchids 2019 Calendar
