Happy New Year! + An Announcement

dc_gardenHappy 2017, everyone! I don’t know about you, but I was thrilled to say good riddance to 2016. Even though 2016 wasn’t a bad year overall for me personally, it was time for it to go.

If you haven’t gotten your 2017 Brooklyn Orchids calendar yet, you can order one from my Zazzle store at a 20.17% discount using this promo code:

ZAZHELLO2017

The promo code is good through Wednesday, January 4, 2017.

You’re probably wondering what my announcement is. Well, after 15 years of living in New York City, I’m moving to Washington, DC! My husband’s business is expanding there and at some point over the last six months it became clear that it would make more sense for him to move to DC than for him to commute between the two cities on a frequent basis. There was no real reason for us to keep our apartment in Brooklyn simply for me to stay here…so we’re packing up all of our stuff and ripping the NYC bandaid off.

Just wanted to write a quick update before I head to Italy for my honeymoon! As promised, I’ve given my blog a bit of a facelift. It’s officially a work in progress at this point, so there will be more changes once I return from my trip. I want to play around with the theme’s colors, font, etc etc…I don’t exactly have a vision for how I want it to look so I’ll be making tweaks here and there for a little while.

If you see anything on my website that looks funky or broken, please let me know and I’ll work on fixing it when I’m back!

Please send good orchid vibes my way—we’ll be hitting up the Dolomites and Sestri Levante in the Italian Riviera (among other places), and there are some wild orchids in those parts of Italy! From the bit of research I’ve done, the orchids native to the areas we’ll be visiting most likely won’t be in bloom while we’re there, but hey, you never know. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some wild orchid sightings. And we may try to visit a botanical garden or two in between eating pasta and pizza and drinking vino.

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday and the (almost-but-not-quite) end of summer!

More Orchid Apparel Coming Our Way with Altuzarra for Target

I’m gonna go off topic a little again here, but it’s orchid-related, I promise. 🙂

I don’t tend to go apeshit over the haute couture designer collaborations with Target like some people. I’m totally not judging; I have my own things I go apeshit over, like getting the souvenir Arrow bag at Comic-Con*. I do, of course, appreciate these collaborations for the creative designs that cost far less than they would normally. Over the years I think I’ve just bought a couple designer pieces at Target, because once I see the items in person I’m often disappointed. I bought an Erin Fetherston cardigan years back, and I bought a cute, swingy blouse by The Webster for Target a couple years ago, but I think that’s it.

However, I may actually have to go apeshit with Target’s upcoming Altuzarra collaboration. I started to click through the full collection slideshow at Refinery29 and was mildly underwhelmed, but then my clicking through stopped in its tracks. Why? THIS:

In the coming weeks you may notice some tweaks to my site here and there, such as the new “subscribe” feature (thanks to Lindsey from punkadotamus.com for the suggestion!). In the box on the sidebar you’ll see a box that says SIGN UP FOR EMAIL UPDATES. Enter your email address, click subscribe, and you’ll receive an email every time I publish a new post!

Now on to the main reason for this post: I’m happy to announce that you can now follow Brooklyn Orchids on a variety of social media networks! Obviously there are a million and one of these sites out there, but for now I’ve chosen the ones that I feel most comfortable with using (and have the most fun with, too!).

Facebook: Brooklyn Orchids (http://www.facebook.com/brooklynorchids)

Pinterest: BrooklynOrchids (http://www.pinterest.com/brooklynorchids/)

Instagram: BrooklynOrchids (http://instagram.com/brooklynorchids)

Twitter: @BrooklynOrchids (https://twitter.com/BrooklynOrchids)

My Twitter account has been rather…ahem…inactive as of late, but I’ll be working to remedy that.

You’ll also notice that I’ve added a Pinterest “Pin It” button to all of the images on my website. The button will appear when you hover over an image, and you can click it and pin it to any of your Pinterest boards! Speaking of Pinterest, I’m working on adding more content to my boards, but right now my own favorite boards are Orchids Terrariums + Display Cases and Whimsical Orchids.

Please do follow me on your favorite social networks for updates when I publish new blog posts and more fun orchid-related things (and probably pictures of cats, because they’re awesome)!

One last note: I’m playing around with some new features and ways of displaying things, so if you see anything weird please let me know! (Also, if you see ads  on my site that you hate please tell me the link and I may block them—last week I was getting served ads on my own website from a major religious organization. NO THANK YOU.)

Have a great weekend, everyone!
