Brooklyn Orchids 2018 Calendar Now Available!

Hello orchid lovers! I wanted to let you know that the Brooklyn Orchids 2018 Calendar is now available in my Zazzle store. The calendar contains original photos of orchids taken by yours truly at a variety of orchid shows and displays over the years.

My calendar measures 8.5″ x 11″ and lists American holidays throughout each month. It’s a great gift for orchid fans, or you can treat yourself to one! I know I’ll buy a calendar for myself, as I do every year.

The calendar costs $24.90, but Zazzle very frequently offers promo codes with varying discounts. There is currently a 20% off sitewide discount when you use the code ZAZZLETWENTY at checkout (promo ends at 11:59pm PT on November 19). And they typically offer promo codes for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so if you’re planning to participate in the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy (I’m not judging…we all do it), that would also be a great time to buy your Brooklyn Orchids calendar!

Just a quick note: I haven’t updated much lately because there’s not a whole lot going on with my orchids. I hope that changes soon!

As always, thank you so much for reading and supporting my little blog. I hope all of your orchids are happy and healthy!

Full Water Culture Update + My First Fall Spike!

Well, as per usual it’s been a very long time since my last post! I was waiting to do an update on my full water culture experiment but not a whole lot was happening so I kept waiting…and waiting. Even though I don’t have anything mind-blowing to share, I finally decided to write a post to show the orchids’ progress since I started the experiment in mid-May.

Full Water Culture for Orchids: An Experiment

I’m back! I know, it’s been awhile since my last post (as usual). My orchids are still adjusting to our new apartment, and though I’ve lost a couple that were doing poorly even before our move, most of them seem to be pretty happy here. I’ve also achieved my first African violet bloom in about two years!

Lately, I’ve been attempting to revive my Mule Ear Oncidium, which I grew mounted on a slab of tree fern for years. After our move I un-mounted it from the slab, which was beginning to disintegrate, and cut off a whole hell of a lot of rotten roots. The plant has put out many new growths over the years but it has never really thrived or bloomed, and it had become clear to me that it was time for a change. I mean, look at the base of this poor thing:

Not to quote our president, but…Sad!

My New Orchid Setup in DC

Now that we’ve settled into our apartment in DC, I thought I would share my new orchid growing setup here. We’re rending a condo on the top floor of a 4-ish story building (the bottom floor is an English basement). Our apartment gets mostly northern exposure, which is not great for orchids, but one room has a brighter, eastern-facing window…and we have a loft and several skylights!

Phal that I treated myself to from our new neighborhood Whole Foods that opened up a couple weeks after our move.

Brooklyn Orchids is Now Based in DC!

Phew! It’s been awhile since I posted about my move to Washington, DC. Well, I’ve been here for almost a month now! I’ve finally reached the point where I feel settled enough start exploring my new city. So last Friday morning I took my first ride on the DC Circulator over to the National Mall, where I hit up the Hirshhorn Musem. Everyone else is visiting this museum for the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrors exhibit, but I went because it’s hosting an orchid exhibit through May 14!

Happy New Year! + An Announcement

dc_gardenHappy 2017, everyone! I don’t know about you, but I was thrilled to say good riddance to 2016. Even though 2016 wasn’t a bad year overall for me personally, it was time for it to go.

If you haven’t gotten your 2017 Brooklyn Orchids calendar yet, you can order one from my Zazzle store at a 20.17% discount using this promo code:

ZAZHELLO2017

The promo code is good through Wednesday, January 4, 2017.

You’re probably wondering what my announcement is. Well, after 15 years of living in New York City, I’m moving to Washington, DC! My husband’s business is expanding there and at some point over the last six months it became clear that it would make more sense for him to move to DC than for him to commute between the two cities on a frequent basis. There was no real reason for us to keep our apartment in Brooklyn simply for me to stay here…so we’re packing up all of our stuff and ripping the NYC bandaid off.
