Happy New Year! + An Announcement

dc_gardenHappy 2017, everyone! I don’t know about you, but I was thrilled to say good riddance to 2016. Even though 2016 wasn’t a bad year overall for me personally, it was time for it to go.

If you haven’t gotten your 2017 Brooklyn Orchids calendar yet, you can order one from my Zazzle store at a 20.17% discount using this promo code:

You’re probably wondering what my announcement is. Well, after 15 years of living in New York City, I’m moving to Washington, DC! My husband’s business is expanding there and at some point over the last six months it became clear that it would make more sense for him to move to DC than for him to commute between the two cities on a frequent basis. There was no real reason for us to keep our apartment in Brooklyn simply for me to stay here…so we’re packing up all of our stuff and ripping the NYC bandaid off.

I’m honestly very excited to be moving to a new city, and I’m looking forward to getting to know DC. I’m not super familiar with the city just yet but have visited multiple times. A few years ago we visited DC for several days and went to the United States Botanic Garden, which has a very lovely orchid collection (see photo above). I am also sad to be leaving New York, though I’ve sort of been over it for quite some time. Lots of mixed emotions around here!

On an administrative note, I am not going to change the name or URL of my website. Brooklyn is where I was living when I fell in love with orchids and started this little blog, so Brooklyn Orchids it shall remain.

The most likely scenario has us moving at the beginning of March, and I’m hoping to be able to make it to the New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show before we move (though moving stresses me out like nobody’s business, so we’ll have to see…). The 2017 Orchid Show—theme: Thailand—begins February 18 and runs through April 9, so even if I can’t make it before the move, maybe I can pop back up to NYC to see it before it’s over!

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2017 for all of you and your orchids!  🙂

  1. I live in DC! I would love to meet you and welcome you here. I’d love to have someone to talk orchids with. Thanks for the tips on places to visit. I might try to make up to NYC for the orchid show too.
    Feel free to email me.

      1. I have not. In fact, I don’t know anyone else who has any interest in orchids. I’m looking forward to getting to know you. 🙂 You can see my email address, right? Feel free to email me there.

  2. Just wanted to say “Thanks” for all the photos and information. Stumbled onto your site when looking for help for a small RIP category orchid. All your input gives me hope and I will make an effort to resuscitate the poor thing.
