Orchid Show 2014 Visit: Year Six

Wow…I’ve really been failing as a blogger lately. There’s been too much going on to keep up with regular posts here! The good news is that I currently have five Phals in bloom, three of which can be seen in this photo:

That beauty on the far left with the green blooms? That’s a big ol’ Cymbidium (my first ever!) that I bought at the new Gowanus Whole Foods just after Valentine’s day. It’s no longer in bloom but it was fun while it lasted:

Love the green flowers!

Now, on to the main event of this post: my visit to the New York Botanical Garden‘s 2014 Orchid Show! Yesterday marked my sixth year in a row attending the show, and it just never gets old. This year’s theme? Key West Contemporary. It wasn’t as eye-popping as Vertical Gardens or as theatrical as Orchids On Broadway, but it was still well designed and aesthetically pleasing. Really, how can you go wrong with thousands of orchids on a chilly winter early spring day?

As always, I took a ton of photos. This was my first Orchid Show using my new camera, a Canon PowerShot SD110 gifted to me by my husband over the holidays. I haven’t figured out how to use all of the crazy settings, but I was able to take really nice shots with this baby! Without further ado, here are some of my favorites…

Anyone have a clue what this next orchid is? Seems like some sort of Oncidium/Miltonia cross, maybe? Definitely part of the Oncidium Alliance. It had a pleasant fragrance.

Love at first sight.

You know I have to include at least one Zygo pic.

This Phal made me gasp. Gorgeous.
Check out the faint yellow and pink outline around the flowers’ edges.
Absolutely gorgeous peloric Phal with unique markings.

And last but not least, the centerpiece display:

Have you been to this year’s orchid show yet? What was your favorite part? It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but I just loved the Vandas hanging in the room with the yellow wall so I’m gonna go with those.  🙂
